"Two huge energy deals to watch"- the article published by Tom Bulford on 27th October starts with this headline, who is one of the top columnist of Money Week. As usual, he has supported electricity production trough coal mining.
But the question is, 'Is it really needed for Bangladesh at present?'
In real sense, Bangladesh does not need these kinds of deals. Bangladesh has potentiality to produce electricity from renewable energies & from other kinds. In recent, around 5000 MW is daily demand of electricity in Bangladesh & the country daily produces 3800 MW- 4000 MW. Clearly, there is shortage of 1000 MW- 1200 MW. And, the demand for electricity is rising day by day but there is nothing to be scared. Bangladesh has already signed a deed with Russia to set up twice nuclear energy plants for producing 2500 MW- 3000 MW electricity daily. In other hand, many organizations are working here very hardly to set up solar panels on the roof of every house & office. It is estimated that, this process will be enough to meet the household demand & in near future Bangladesh will get 1500 MW- 2000 MW electricity from this source only.
Bangladesh does not need electricity from coal mining at all, thus it is very harmful for the country as its economy is still based on agricultural sector mainly & is one of the most densely populated country. In addition, a very big portion of the total population, over 29.6 million people are related to agricultural sector.
It will not be a wise decision at all, if the Phulbari is given to the foreign companies for coal mining & for electricity production. These companies always search for their maximum profit, without looking over the needs of common people. And, obviously this kind of situation will make the society very clumsy & will lead to happening of unrest.
As we can see, that the practical approaches of these deals will not only damage our farmland by lowering the water level of those areas & thus transforming farmland to desert but will damage our total economy with slowing the agricultural growth, creating unemployment in huge scale, making the inhabitants of there, totally landless & homeless thus beggars. And, the total unsatisfactory motive of people will certainly must blast out through the continuous social disputes & unrests.
